Driving to a meeting in Front Royal, VA today with a new GPS when suddenly…
What do I see? Tasteful display ads popping up on the Garmin! The first ad was for BP – offering savings on gas and the second was for a hotel chain including a “book online & save 20% coupon.”
Although I didn’t take action on either one, this could be a great thing for local and small business advertisers in the future. Imagine it… you’re driving down Rockville Pike looking for a place to get your oil changed. You flip on the GPS and tell it what you are searching for. Within seconds, ads are popping up with all the best deals along with directions on how to get there.
Hyper-targeted advertising…and it should be highly trackable!

Garmin Nuvi 265WT
Garmin’s nüvi 265WT improves upon its 200-series predecessors by adding free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) as well as Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone. Other significant improvements in the 2×5 series include a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 265WT provides complete maps for North America and the handy Text-to-Speech feature, so you get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. “turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way”, rather than merely “turn left in 50 feet”).
